BETHESDA, Md. – September 29, 2026 – After more than 36 years in the U.S. Army, Lieutenant General (Ret.) Sean A. Gainey brings his experience in air and missile defense, counter-UAS, space operations, and joint defense missions to Diverse Systems Group (DSG) as a Consultant and Member of the Board of Advisors.
At DSG, Gainey provides strategic counsel and supports the company’s growth and business development in the federal market. His career put him at the center of efforts to bring together operational requirements, technology, organizations, and defense priorities, giving him an expansive understanding of how capabilities move from an identified need to the people responsible for the mission.
“Sean has spent his career bringing people, capabilities, and organizations together around some of our nation’s most important defense missions,” said Keith Scott, CEO. “He understands both the operational need and everything that must come together behind it. That perspective is an important one for DSG and the customers we serve.”
Gainey most recently served as Commanding General of U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command (USASMDC) and Commander of the Joint Functional Component Command for Integrated Missile Defense. In those roles, he led more than 12,500 military and civilian personnel supporting global space, air and missile defense, and high-altitude missions.
While commanding USASMDC, Gainey was also selected to lead Joint Task Force-Gold, a newly established U.S. Northern Command organization supporting the nation’s air and missile defense enterprise for Golden Dome for America. He led efforts to integrate and synchronize organizations and capabilities around the developing mission.
Earlier in his career, Gainey served as the inaugural Director of the Joint Counter-Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Office, where he established a coordinated joint approach to counter-UAS operations. His work included development of the Department of Defense’s first counter-small UAS strategy and joint training program, bringing together requirements, capabilities, doctrine, training, and stakeholders from throughout the military services.
Other senior assignments throughout his career gave Gainey experience in Army modernization, joint requirements, force protection, and theater air and missile defense. Together, those roles gave him a broad view of how defense priorities move from operational requirements to strategy, investment, and implementation.
Throughout my career, the hardest defense challenges have rarely belonged to a single organization or capability. They require people who understand the mission, bring the right capabilities together, and work across organizational boundaries. I look forward to bringing that perspective to DSG as the company works with defense and federal customers.
